Court Of King'S Bench. () The remarkable case of Potter Jackson, formerly steward of the Echo sloop of war: giving an account of the most cruel treatment, he received from Captain Livesly, commander of the Lord Stanly slave-ship and his chief mate, by assaulting, imprisoning, putting in irons, and cruelly flogging him.

The book is set in the middle part of the American war of indepence. There are no fleet to fleet actions. Rather it is a sea war of small ships on both sides, schooners, sloops and in the case of the Americans, what ever they can lay their hands on. It is a campaign of blockade pure and simple. It is also a war of combined or joint operations/5(). A Sloop of War () I quite enjoy the cryptic start to Mr. Allan’s novels, this being the second that I have undertaken. It certainly does not disappoint and this is a good story and getting moreso as we proceed into the book. At 36% there is much excitement and it is difficult to put the novel down/5(81).

“A Sloop Of War” is a great book for anyone who enjoys historical fiction. In my opinion, the language used in the book finds the right balance between the old-fashioned, often lengthy figures of speech that were common some centuries ago, and the laconic, straight-to-the-point manner that is typical for modern speakers and many contemporary books/5(88).

Sloop of War is filled with action and intrigue. The author paints a vivid picture of the men and of the time during the age of fighting ships under sail. This is a story well told and the author leaves us wanting more/5().

A Sloop of War is a historical nautical war story that is predominantly masculine in nature. Here ladies occupy the backstage and in many cases only referred to or remembered.

The thing that I loved about the book was its historical angle that included some of the facts and the books that I had read about/5.

The book starts injust after the previous book left off. The American War of Independence is still in progress. It describes Bolithos promotion from a Sloop of war. book in a ship of the line to commanding the titular Sloop-of-War Sparrow/5. Rigging. A sloop-of-war was quite different from a civilian or mercantile sloop, which was a general term for a single-masted vessel rigged in a way that would today be called a gaff cutter (but usually without the square topsails then carried by cutter-rigged vessels), though some sloops of that type did serve in the 18th century British Royal Navy, particularly on the Great Lakes of North.
